Christina’s notes from the field: The drawing is by Boubacar, who herds animals and has his unique and mysterious way of drawing the cattle. Amidst them is a more anatomically correct cow drawn by his friend Issa who also herds cattle. Issa has had more of a western education than Boubacar, but both versions are lovely. Issa helps out Boubacar a lot during the class as in the photo above because they are both Peul and Boubacar doesn’t understand French or the other dominant language, Tamacheck that we use in the class. Boubacar while unable to communicate directly with most of the other students assistants or myself is really expressive and funny and likes to interact with lots of gestures and sounds!
